With the signing of the MOU between Big Country VOAD and City of Abilene Fire Department for the enhancement of disaster response services, on the last day of 2016 Disaster Preparedness Month, we are now able to actively engage in developing Community Emergency Response Teams(CERT) for Abilene. CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The BCVOAD will begin CERT recruiting and trainings in 2017.
AFD Chief, Larry Bell and BCVOAD Chair, FEMA CERT Instructor, Global Samaritan Director of Logistics and Disaster Services, Esther Kissell signed the agreement. They were joined by AFD Chaplain, Chris Hale and United Way of Abilene 2-1-1 Program Director, Mary Cooksey.
The Big Country Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster assists residents of West Central Texas in planning, training, and preparing for future disasters.
