Welcome to the Big Country VOAD Website!

Looking for ideas on how to make an emergency plan for your family?

  • Do you or someone you know need assistance during emergencies? Learn more about the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR). Dial 2-1-1, make your language selection, and choose option 4 to register for STEAR.
  • If you are in Taylor County, sign up for CodeRED Weather Warnings and receive phone calls/text messages whenever severe weather or emergency situations are in your area. Please check with your local emergency management if you live in another county for information about weather warnings in your area.
  • With the signing of the MOU between Big Country VOAD and City of Abilene Fire Department for the enhancement of disaster response services, on the last day of 2016 Disaster Preparedness Month, we are now able to actively engage in developing  Community Emergency Response Teams(CERT) for Abilene. CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The BCVOAD will begin CERT recruiting and trainings in 2017.

AFD Chief, Larry Bell and BCVOAD Chair, FEMA CERT Instructor, Global Samaritan Director of Logistics and Disaster Services, Esther Kissell signed the agreement.  They were joined by AFD Chaplain, Chris Hale and United Way of Abilene 2-1-1 Program Director, Mary Cooksey.
